The naturalistic carving of 17th century woodworker Grinling Gibbons serves as the inspiration for the Garland Collection. Master carver to Charles II, Gibbons was commissioned to create architectural ornamentation – paneling, mantels, and fireplace surrounds – for such noteworthy building projects as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Hampton Court, and Windsor Castle. Richly carved garlands as well as festoons of fruits and flowers became his hallmark.
